Containment

Manufactured synthetic lining products have allowed for efficient design and construction of containment structures such as ponds, lagoons, landfills, tanks and secondary spill containment facilities, including vapour management systems. Because of the wide variety of project conditions and materials being contained and with so many liner types to choose from, the design and selection of the appropriate lining materials can be a complex task.

With over 25 years of experience in geomembrane containment technology, Nilex offers design assistance, fabrication, installation and construction services for containment applications. The Nilex containment technology process involves compatibility testing and the consideration of facility design and climatic factors.

Nilex professionals will work with the owner, engineering consultant and the general contractor to ensure the optimum design with the most efficient and cost-effective installation for the containment application.

Primary Containment

Primary containment applications, such as landfills or tailings ponds, require geomembranes to prevent the leaching of materials into the surrounding soil and groundwater.

Nilex geomembrane technology offers a wide range of materials for the containment of a wide range of liquids, solids and waste materials. Specialty materials are available for unique chemical and/or thermal conditions. Please contact the Nilex office nearest you for information on appropriate material selection.

Nilex Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
Nilex Polyvinyl Chloride
is shipped to site in prefabricated panels and offers a high degree of flexibility and workability.

Nilex Isoflex
Nilex Isoflex is used in applications where enhanced chemical resistance is required and when extreme temperature conditions may be present. Isoflex is shipped to site in prefabricated panels and offers a high degree of flexibility and workability.

Secondary Containment

The storage of industrial liquids in tanks, drums or other containers usually requires the construction of a secondary containment facility that provides protection against potential leaks or breaches.

Nilex offers several options for long-term or temporary secondary spill containment materials that are custom fabricated to the size required. Specialty materials are also available for unique chemical and/or thermal conditions. Please contact the Nilex office nearest you for information on appropriate material selection.

Containment Rings
Containment Ring
or steel berm systems are easy to assemble, self-supporting and can be configured to meet a wide variety of site-specific sizes. Nilex offers a complete turnkey package from supply to installation, including the liner.

Tank Lining

For more than 25 years Nilex has been installing primary containment lining systems inside steel, concrete, and wood containment structures.

Tank

With over 1,100 structures lined, Nilex uses technically advanced geosynthetic materials to fabricate our Loose-Fit Tank Lining System, making it possible to install a primary containment system inside above ground storage tanks and below ground concrete structures. The loose-fit nature of the liners allows continuous monitoring to ensure containment and protection of the tank and the environment.

Benefits include:

Corrosion Protection/Control: The liner serves in a primary containment capacity, acting as a protective barrier between the tank (secondary containment) and the fluid, eliminating corrosion.

Extend Tank/Asset Life: Liners can rejuvenate an existing tank (bolted, riveted, welded, concrete or wood) and extend its lifespan. Liners can be installed in new or existing tanks, reducing the risk of top side corrosion damage.

Maintenance Cost Reduction: Nilex geomembrane liners provide a cost effective maintenance alternative as they can be installed on top of a failed coating or fiberglass liner - existing coating/liners do not need to be removed. Liners can also eliminate the need for steel patching and/or floor replacement. Note: tank needs to meet API specifications. The installation of a lining system does not require the same level of preparation to the structure surface that applied coatings require, resulting in cost savings and less asset downtime.

Environmental: Nilex systems are designed to meet regulations for monitored dual containment. The loose-fit liners are approved in many areas for primary containment, with the tank acting as secondary containment, allowing your company to meet environmental commitments.

The following video provides a simulation of the processes involved in a typical tank lining installation. Note: this video is only a representation and is not intended to be used as an installation guide.

Soil Gas Barrier Systems

Soil gas barrier systems use geomembranes to inhibit the seepage of gases, such as radon and methane from one area to another.

Geomembrane liners can be installed under or around concrete foundations and floors to prevent the build-up of dangerous gases in building structures, eliminating potential indoor air quality health risks associated with subsurface contaminant vapour intrusion. Any gas that is generated under the building is transported under the liner and then vented safely to the outside.

Traditional soil gas barrier systems can require extra excavation and costly backfill. Nilex has developed a proven solution that can significantly reduce these costs in materials and time.

Contact our Calgary office for more information regarding our soil gas barrier systems.

Installation Services

The development of manufactured synthetic lining products has allowed for the efficient design and construction of large containment structures such as ponds, lagoons, landfills and secondary spill containment facilities. Because there are a wide variety of materials and it is possible to combine several materials on any given project, the design and selection of the appropriate materials is a complex task.

Covers

Geomembrane covers are generally used to protect materials from water infiltration and to prevent loss of material from erosion by wind or water. Additionally, covers can provide odour control.

Short-term cover applications include soil remediation projects, temporary stock pile covers and erosion protection on slopes in active construction sites. Long-term applications include landfill closure covers or caps. Another application is to extend the life of above-ground storage tank roofs.

Nilex offers a wide variety of materials suitable for use in cover applications. Please contact your nearest Nilex office for assistance in material selection.

Materials used in cover applications include:

Reinforced Polyethylene (RPE)
Nilex Reinforced Polyethylene is a popular and economical choice for temporary protection of materials such as stockpiled soil.

Nilex Enviroflex Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE)
Nilex Enviroflex is often used in landfill capping applications due to its durability, ability to accommodate differential settlement and capability to be prefabricated into large panels.

Nilex Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
Nilex Polyvinyl Chloride is used for landfill caps due to its ability to accommodate differential settlement and capability to be prefabricated into large panels.

Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs)
GCLs are used alone, or in combination with a geomembrane in a composite cover system.  GCLs are easily installed and a good alternative to traditional compacted clay liners.

Nilex High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
Nilex High Density Polyethylene is used to cap completed landfill cells.
